Exploring Turkish Landscapes: Crossing Inner Boundaries now available in Turkish (Türkçe aşağı)
Back in 2013 I started a blog to share my experiences of the everyday extraordinary of life in modern Istanbul, but my passion for Turkey started long before that. I first set foot on Turkish soil in 1990 and since then have travelled all over the country and met hundreds of people. I’ve exchanged passing comments with random strangers on buses, discussed changes to our neighbourhood/news/food in detail with owners of the shops I frequent, taught university students and descendants of the Ottoman elite, befriended dancers, doctors and bankers, conversed with taxi drivers, bakers, hotel owners, holidaying public servants, dentists and well, people from all walks of life.
I also used what I’ve heard and learned in my four books, Inside Out In Istanbul: Making Sense of the City, Istanbul Dreams: Waiting for the Tulips to Bloom, Exploring Turkish Landscapes: Crossing Inner Boundaries and Longing for Istanbul: The Words I Haven’t Said Yet. My aim in writing all of them was to share the real Turkey I’ve grown to love, rather than the Instagram picture perfect postcard version.
The majority of my readers come from the UK, US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, with a fair few from South East Asia too, who’ve already visited Turkey as a tourist or want to come after watching one of the country’s many mini-series now taking the world by storm. Then there’s the expat Turks. The people who send me messages and emails telling me how my words both comfort them and make them long for home. Like me they’re yabanci, foreigners, both in their adopted country but also when they’re in Turkey. Here they are both yerli (local) and not, because over the years they’ve changed and adapted their way of living to suit their new place of residence.

2013’te modern İstanbul’da hayatın olağandışı olağandışı deneyimlerini paylaşmak için bir blog açtım ama Türkiye’ye olan tutkum bundan çok önce başladı. Benim gibi yabancılar, hem evlat edindikleri ülkede hem de Türkiye’deyken. Burada hem yerli hem de değiller, çünkü yıllar içinde yaşam tarzlarını yeni ikamet yerlerine uyacak şekilde değiştirdiler ve uyarladılar.
